HOWTO Setup a Hetzner EQ4 with Debian Lenny, XEN 3.2.1 and a routed network configuration plus 1 to 1 NAT
This tutorial is correct: 18 August 2009
I have now spent about five days, installing, reinstalling, having to get my server rebooted by support, trying to get a good working installation of Xen without being able to use the standard bridging setup because of the Hetzner way of doing things with the IP addresses. I have tried different distros but this seems to be the only configuration I can successfully get to work. Be warned! If you try to use other tutorials that use bridged mode it is likely that you will be locked out of your server. A simple hard reset by support will recover it for you but you may have top wait a long period of time for this to happen, particularly at the weekend.
This describes the installation of a HETZNER EQ4 Server with Debian Lenny as dom0 and also a Debian Lenny as a domU and a routed network configuration. We also cover setting up Windows 2003 server (this should also apply to Windows 2008 and any variant of windows) using 1-1 NAT. This enables you to utilise all 4 additional IP addresses provided free by Hetzner. As long as you are familiar with using NANO you should be ablt to have your Xen EQ4 server up and running within an hour.
Renting a new dedicated server
Today, Thursday 13th, I rented myself a new server. Over time I have accumulated one or two of different specifications for different projects. This time I thought I would get myself a more powerful one and try and consolidate the existing ones.
My usual provider, OVH who I would recommend without hesitation just happens to be restructuring their plans and so I thought I would give another provider a try. In the end I chose a company whose datacentres are located in Germany.
The server I chose was their EQ4, an impressive specification for an impressive price...
